What is Community Care?

Community Care is a mutual-aid support system in which we all support each other, together.

It's a way for us all to join in solidarity to better understand, connect and care for our friends and neighbors, including those we know personally and those we do not.

Community Care is our hands-on effort to address the needs of our community through what we do best: fresh food, hands-on education and showing someone you care through the gift of flowers.

By pooling resources, together we can increase access to these opportunities for everyone in the Fairbanks community!

Areas of Community Care

We're committed to making our programs and products accessible to as many people as we can.

All donations to Community Care are put right back into the community through the following initiatives:

Education Programs

Pay What You Can Discounts

All of Calypso's education programs are offered on a Pay What You Can basis, up to 50% off to anyone in need, regardless of circumstance.

These programs include Farm Camp and Farm School for youth, farm and garden workshops, field trips, farmer training programs, and our People & Place at-home curriculum. We also offer Pay What You Can discounts on plant starts and seeds, as well as fresh food (more details below).

Community Food Relief

Dotty Harris Mutual Aid Fund

The Dotty Harris Mutual Aid Fund was created to increase access to healthy food from local sources to anyone facing barriers. Donations provide vital funds needed to offer Pay What You Can discounts on vegetables grown at the farm, as well as all fresh food sold by other vendors at the Southside Community Farmers Market. They also allow us to donate vegetable shares each week during the growing season to seniors, families and other individuals in need.

This fund was established in honor of Dotty Harris, founding member of the Southside Market's steering committee, incredible advocate for families and children in Fairbanks, and dear friend of Calypso.

Memorial Flowers

We're honored to have people trust us with the flower arrangements for their loved one's memorial services and Celebrations of Life. We also recognize the costs associated with these events are often unexpected and burdensome. The tradition of having fresh flowers to commemorate someone's life and add a personal touch to a service is a privilege not everyone has and we'd love to help provide them to those who want them.

Donations through Community Care will help us work with local funeral homes and individuals to provide arrangements for those who cannot afford the extra expense.

Community Bouquets

During the flower season, we arrange bouquets to deliver to Hospice of the Tanana Valley and host “Make Your Own Bouquet” days for residents at the Pioneer Home, Southall Manor, Golden Ages and Golden Towers.

A $10 donation will provide one bouquet for someone in Hospice care — or you can contribute towards a bucket of flowers for residents to have fun making their own beautiful arrangements! Calypso will match these donations, so for every bouquet you donate, we will arrange and deliver two.
